Classification
Supplemental: Parkinson's Disease (PD)
Short Description of Instrument
The MDS-NMS is a revised version of the Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS). It is an assessment of non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD).

The scale is rater-completed. Frequency and severity of PD and treatment related non-motor symptoms are measured (over the past month) across 13 non-motor domains. This version goes into greater detail than the previous NMSS.

Questions assess change in non-motor symptoms in relation to the timing of anti-parkinsonian medications.
The scale can be used for patients at all stages of PD.
Comments/Special Instructions
Domain 10 (or "J") of the MDS-NMS scale covers the GI tract. There are 4 GI symptoms covered: drooling, swallowing, nausea, and constipation (defined as stooling less than 3 times weekly).
Scoring and Psychometric Properties
Scoring: Each symptom is scored with respect to the severity (0 to 4 point scale) and frequency (0 to 4 point scale). For each question/symptom, frequency x severity is calculated, and the sum of these products is tallied to get the score for the domain. For the GI domain, total scores can range from 0-16.

Psychometric Properties: The GI domain showed a Cronbach's alpha under the criterion 0.7 (gastrointestinal 0.45). Item homogeneity analysis showed that the GI domain did not exceed the accepted standard 0.30 (gastrointestinal IH 0.16).
Rationale/Justification
Strengths: Easy to administer (10-15 minutes), widely used in PD clinical trials, covers 4 of the most common GI symptoms in PD.

Weaknesses: Limited to just 4 GI symptoms, GI domain psychometric properties are modest compared to some of the other domains within the MDS-NMS.
